In May 2014 the city of Santos in São Paulo state opened the first stage of an 11.5km east–west light rail line over tracks formerly used by commuter rail trains (until 1999) and freight trains (until 2008). The full line (completed in 2016) linked Porto and Tatico with 15 stations and was worked by 43.7m seven-section Tramlink LRVs built by Vossloh in Valencia, Spain (the factory now owned by Stadler). The full fleet of 22 LRVs was delivered to provide for subsequent extension as a street tramway into the city centre.
Trial operation on the extension of the light rail line over 8km of city centre street track from Conselheiro Nébias to Valongo started on 1 December 2025 with the public able to board trains and ride free during the period 09.00-15.00. Revenue service was due to start on 16 December. A full service 05.30-23.30 is expected in May or June 2026. The city had to undertake negotiations with merchants who were used to taking deliveries from the street outside their premises, now occupied by tram tracks. The project cost BRR 395M. The initial eastern terminus at Porto (one stop) is no longer used, but the line is retained for access to the depot and control centre. A third section of line is planned reaching 19.5km west from Tatico to Baixada Santista.
