The Saltsjöbanan is a standard-gauge 18.5km 132-year old suburban light rail line running in the south-east of the Swedish capital linking Slussen interchange just south of the city centre with Saltsjöbaden in Nacka. Much of the line is single track. Modernisation has been in progress since 2016 with the Slussen–Saltsjö-Jarla section still suspended, probably until 2028. Current rolling stock was built by ASEA in 1975-76 will be replaced as part of the modernisation.
On 11 November it was announced that Skoda Transportation was the successful bidder in response to a tender for new LRVs for the line. The EUR 230M order is for 16 two-section air-conditioned 36m vehicles (option a further 15) each with capacity for 250 passengers (94 seated). All bogies will be powered and they will be fitted with automatic train control. Operating temperatures will range from -25oC to +40oC. Delivery will start in early 2029.
Jan harder, President of the West and North region at Skoda said, 'We are developing a completely new type of light rail vehicle that offers greater comfort, speed, and flexibility – the key features of modern urban mobility. This is another strategic project with which we aim to strengthen our position in the Nordic region and open up a new market for our rail vehicles. We are delighted that the delivery of vehicles to the Stockholm region will make daily commuting between the Swedish capital and its surrounding areas more modern and comfortable for residents’.
