The new station at Magna, on the Sheffield to Rotherham tram-train service, will open on 9 April as the first additional stop on the line since the inauguration of tram-train service in October 2018.
The £10.1M project has been delivered by the South Yorkshire Combined Authority in partnership with Network Rail and South Yorkshire Supertram. It provides access to the Magna Science Adventure Centre, a popular family attraction built on the site of the former Steelos steelworks at Templeborough between Tinsley and Rotherham ands also incorporates a 100-space P+R site. Funding has come from the government’s Transforming Cities Fund, to improve access to two of South Yorkshire’s most important employment corridors and support regeneration ambitions for the Don Valley. The stop, located on Network Rail infrastructure, is fully accessible, with a pedestrian footbridge and lifts; there is also cycle parking and EV charging facilities.
Sean English, Managing Director of Supertram, said, ‘Magna is an important addition to the Tram-train network and we are excited to connect passengers with this fantastic venue and its events.
Our colleagues, including trained drivers, are ready to serve this stop, and we thank everyone involved in the project. The new Park+Ride facility also offers great opportunities for people travelling between Rotherham and Sheffield’.
