At Innotrans 2026 the Swiss group Stadler presented the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell powered three-section low-floor units for narrow-gauge (950mm) lines in Calabria, Sardinia and Sicily. 21 units are on order for FdC, ARST and FCE.
They are expected to save over 2100t of carbon dioxide each year compares with the diesel trains that are being replaced. They feature lithium traction batteries, water-cooled traction converters and asynchronous traction motors. The low axle load is less than 11t per axle. Each can carry 147 passengers (87 seated) and are built at Bussnang in Switzerland. The example at Innotrans is for ARST.
