In the French city of Strasbourg (capital of Grand Est - Alsace, with a population of 277 000 ) there was a ceremony on 26 August to mark the first rail installation on the 4km, EUR 122M, Tram Ouest extension taking line F from Comtes to Wolfsheim.
Passengers should be carried in December 2025 and a one third increase in patronage is expected. Delivery of 12 more Alstom Citadis 45m trams will start in spring 2025. There is an option for 10 more. This will complete the withdrawal of the fleet of ABB built Eurotram.
The public inquiry for the new tram lines to the north (Schiltigheim and Bischheim) is taking place between 9 September and 18 October. This will determine the precise routes for the line in the city and the decision on the route of the Schiltigheim branch. The 4.8km corridors were chosen in December 2021, to be served by extending lines C and E. Total cost is budgeted at EUR 300M, of which EUR 44M is for rolling stock. Passenger service is expected in 2027.
Strasbourg re-introduced trams in November 1994 and the system has expanded to six lines covering 49.1km (30.5 miles) carrying about 75M passengers/year. 43 Eurotram were delivered in 1994-2000. 65 Alstom Citadis 403 trams were delivered from 2005 onwards, including 12 equipped to meet BOStrab regulations for the cross-border line to Kehl in Germany.
