The first Swedish Tram Driver Championship will take place at the Malmköping museum tramway on 5 September. The competition has been established to recognise the professional skills, safety culture and expertise required to operate trams, while raising awareness of the importance of tramways both as a modern mode of public transport and a living part of Sweden’s cultural heritage. The inaugural championship brings together teams from the cities of Stockholm, Göteborg (Gothenburg) and Norrköping, all with established tramways. In future it is hoped that the small tramway at Lund will be represented, and later Uppsala, which is currently developing a new system.
The museum tramway in the town of Malmköping has been operated by the not-for-profit Swedish Tramway Society (Svenska Spårvägssällskapet) since 1969 and is a living museum where historic trams continue to operate in regular heritage service. it has been named Working Life Museum of the year for 2026. During the competition drivers of modern trams will demonstrate their abilities behind the controls of historic trams, with a series of practical driving challenges to test precision, safety, technical competence and vehicle handling. The competition will be open to visitors.
Malmköping is a small town 14km from the railway station at Flen, with a regular bus link. Line 430 takes 23 minutes and operates hourly. Flen can be reached by rail from Stockholm and Norrköping.
