Systra appointed to oversee Alexandria tramway modernisation

Consultant SYSTRA has signed a contract for the design and supervision of the modernisation of the Ramleh tram lines. After a design phase of 10 months, there will be a construction phase of 24 months. The project includes the construction of footbridges, colour light signalling and new rolling stock. The aim is to halve journey times, in part by reducing the number of stops. 13.2km of infrastructure will be modernised with stop reconstruction to an average distance of 500m between stops that will help raise the commercial speed from 11km/h to 21km/h. A 1km extension at the city end is planned. All work is due to be completed in 2027/28 with loans from the French Development Agency and European Investment Bank.
Earlier this year a contract worth KOW 321.2bn was signed with HyundaiRotem for the supply of 30 65m trams including maintenance for 12 years, to replace the current rolling stock, three-car trains Japanese built in the 1970s and including a few double-deck trams (though in 2025 these are not often seen in service). The standard-gauge Alexandria tramway system dates back to 1863 (electrification 1902) and is split between the Ramleh system (four routes on two lines) and the 18.8km city system where ex-København Duewag trams provide service.
