The Finnish city of Tampere (population 226 700) has signed a EUR 25M contract with Skoda Group to extend 11 existing three-section 37.3m trams with an additional 10m module to become four-section 47.3m trams to meet increasing ridership. Delivery will be in 2025-2028 and the contract includes a 10-year service package.
The 16km two-line standard-gauge tramway in Tempere was opened on 9 August 2021 with a predicted annual ridership of 10M, that was reached in the first year. Patronage is now running at about 1M passengers/month. Reliability was 99.12% in the first year and customer satisfaction 4.1 out of 5.
Skoda Transtech has delivered 19 ForCity Smart Artic X34 trams with space for 264 passengers (104 seated). The extended trams will carry up to 345 passengers and the new modules will be built at the Skoda Transtech factory in Otanmäki, Finland.
