With new tramway systems already open in Rabat-Sale (2011) and Casablanca (2012), it has now been announced that Tangier of to get a MKD 8.4bn (USD 840M) investment to build three new tram lines totalling 30km. One reason is that the city has been chosen as one of the host cities for the FIFA 2030 World Cup, requiring improved public transport capacity in the city, that has a population of 1.1M. A FIFA inspection has given public transport in Tangier a rating of 2.6 out of 5, highlighting consequent traffic congestion. A tramway for Tangier has been discussed since 2014, when Alstom/Transdev made a proposal, but this was not taken up.
One line will link Tangier’s main railway station to Moghogha and Béni Makada; a second line will cross the city on Moulay Ismail Boulevard and serve the Hassani sports complex. The third will serve the Tangier Free Zone and the University.
Rabat-Sale has a two-line 24.2km system. Casablanca has a four-line 72.4km system. Both use Alstom single-ended but double-sided trams that are coupled back-to-back in two-car train formation.
