A tram at a stop in Nantes

The Mediterranean port city of Tarragona in Spain (metropolitan population 325 000) has been planning to build a new tramway system for over 15 years. The Catalan transport agency FGC has now awarded worth over EUR 16M to build the first 14.7km from Cambriuls Nord to Vila-séca via Port Aventura, mostly on the alignment of a former railway line. A depot and workshop will be located in Vila-séca. This is the first phase of the TramCamp project that will extend to 46km at a cost of EUR 540M, reaching the university and regional hospital, also serving Reus and the airport. The first phase is due to carry passengers in the first quarter of 2028, using seven standard-gauge 40m Stadler tram-trains each with a capacity for 210 passengers. The tram contract is worth EUR 38.5M.
