On 15 January Toronto transit operator TTC signed a directly-awarded CAD 2.3bn contract with Alstom for the delivery go 70 six-car Metropolis metro trains; the contract includes options for up to 150 more trains. An international tender was cancelled at the time that the US threatened to impose punitive tariffs on Canadian products. The New Subway trains will be built in Canada ash the `Thunder bay factory that Alstom inherited when it took over Bombardier. 55 trains will be used to replace old stock on line 2 (Bloor–Danforth)m and 15 on the planned extensions of line 1 to Yonge North and line 2 to Scarborough. The 126m trains will each carry up to 1300 passengers and feature IGBT traction motors and regenerative braking. The trains will utilise Canadian carbon steel and aluminium, as well as components sourced from domestic supply chains. The province of Ontario is supporting the project through targeted investment to increase Canadian content, creating 945 direct jobs, including 600 at Alstom.
