Almost nine years after it was closed following an accident, the 5.2km metre-gauge Trieste–Opicina tram line was re-opened on 1 February with 19 daily trips using a single car 07.00-20.00. This will go up to 39 daily trips with two cars from 17 February and 58 daily trips with three cars from 3 March. The 1902 line, which incorporates a 600m funicular section to overcome a steep gradient (26%), has its Trieste terminus at Piazza Dalmazia; it will later be re-extended to the traditional terminus at Piazza Oberdan.

The six trams in the fleet were built by Stanga in 1935-42; it was a head-on collision between two trams that caused the closure of the line in August 2016. There are also two pusher cars for the funicular section; these were built by Ceretti & Tanfani in 2006.
