Tram line 18 in the Austrian capital (Wien/Vienna) was extended by 3.1km through the Prater from Schlachthausgasse to Stadion U-Bf/Handelskai on 5 September with seven new stops, 200 new trees and 2150m of new cycle paths. Track construction started in June 2025 and the new extension brings the line to 11.1km. It also provides easier public transport access to the Remise tramway museum at the first stop Ludwig Koessler Platz. At Ernst Happel Stadion an additional turning circle is being built for use during events at the stadium, with line 18 providing a direct link to Hbf (main railway station). The tram uses the existing underpass to reach an interchange with U-Bahn line U2. The loop terminus for line 18 runs via Handelskai and Dr Natterer Gasse; the latter stop will provide easier transit access for customers at the Hilton Waterfront Hotel on Handelskai. It is estimated about six million passengers will use line 18 each year saving up to 1300t of CO2 annually. The tramway replaces the 77A bus, which has been re-routed, and permits through traffic in Prater Hauptallee to be banned.
