Nexus, the passenger transport authority for Newcastle and Sunderland in the north-east of the UK, has unveiled the planned route and station locations for the Tyne & Wear Metro extension to Washington, that will be the network’s first new line for 30 years. It will have three stations, Follingsby (P+R), Washington North and Washington South along its 13km connecting with the existing network at Pelaw and South Hylton to form a new loop. Part of the route uses the alignment of the former Leamside railway line, including the Victoria Viaduct to cross the River Wear. Subject to approvals and funding, work could start ion 2033 with passenger service to follow in 2033.
North-East Mayor Kim McGuiness said, ‘I promised we would extend the Metro to Washington and now the next stage in that plan is underway - three brand new stations for the first time in 30 years. We are doing this because you told us you wanted more affordable, publicly-controlled transport across the North East. Now is the time to have your say on how these plans develop’. 14 public engagement events are being arranged in September. An outline business case is due to be submitted in early 2027.
