The West Midlands tramway is rolling out a new ticketing system on its Birmingham–Wolverhampton line. Ticket machines at stops are already in use, but in the New Year Tap-In Tap-Off validators will be installed across the network to support a new contactless ticket system. Payments to conductors on the tram will cease, but revenue protection will be enhanced with staff dedicated to checking passengers travelling have a valid digital travel document. Michael Reading-Skilton, Head of Commercial at West Midlands Metro. said, ‘Over the next couple of months customers will see the poles holding the validators installed at tram stops, marking another significant step towards a fairer, more inclusive network. As well as making it quicker and more convenient to buy a ticket, the new system will automatically calculate the best fare to cover the cost of the customer’s journey. For those making multiple trips or travelling over several days, the system will cap the total cost to guarantee great value’.
Once the validators go live, all customers using a bank card, smart device, Swift Go card or travel pass will be required to Tap-In and Tap-Out at the start and end of their journeys. The upgrade is part of a broader strategy to modernise the ticketing experience across the West Midlands Metro network as new lines are opened in 2026. The ticket machines already installed are a key part of the Buy Before You Board initiative, which encourages passengers to purchase travel before boarding the tram.
