The 13km Valley Line Southeast in the Canadian city of Edmonton will start carrying passengers on 4 November, three years late according to the original schedule when the PPP contract for its construction and operation was awarded to the TransEd consortium (Bechtel, Bombardier and Fengate Capital) in 2015.

Edmonton has had light rail since 1978, with a subway under the city centre. The Valley Line is a surface stop low-floor operation from 102 St in the city centre south-east to Mill Woods. Bombardier delivered 26 42m Flexity Freedom trams before it was taken over by Alstom.

The project has cost CAD 1.8bn with CAD 250M coming from the federal government and CAD 600M from the provincial government. TransEd will operate the line under the 30-year contract.
