The German city of Frankfurt-am-Main has a network of tramway and light rail lines serving the centre and suburbs, including light rail subways, but suburb to suburb journeys must mostly be made by bus.

In February work started to build the Regionaletangente West, a 52km orbital light rail line around the west side of the city using a mixture of new construction and operation over existing electrified railways.

With the passenger service due to start in December 2028, tenders have now been issued for the supply of rolling stock. Up to 25 double-ended dual-voltage (750 V dc and 15 kV ac) vehicles with a maximum length of 50m and a width of 2.65m are required. Total capacity of each car is 360 passengers.

A decision on the award of a contract is expected around the end of the year with delivery in 2027-2028.
