Kraków tramway expansion continues

In the Polish city of Kraków, 28 August 2022 saw the 1.7 km long new build tramline opened in from Łagiewniki SKA to Kurdwanów Park and Ride, including a 700 m long tunnel section with the underground stop Sanktuarium Bożego. 

 

The line includes improved provision for cyclists and pedestrians and cost PLN 840M, backed by a loan from the European Investment Bank. This strategic link between the terminus of lines 10 and 24 at Kurdwanów and the junction with lines 8, 19 and 22 at Łagiewniki has created a new orbital line in the south of the city and provides interchange to local and regional commuter trains at Łagiewniki SKA.  

 

The tram tunnel runs parallel to a major multi-lane road tunnel but has a separate bore. The new track is used by lines 10, 11 and 50. 

 

After delivery of the first 50, 60 more Stadler Lajkonic trams are currently entering service and MPK is consulting with the market on plans for the purchase of 60 new low-floor air-conditioned 40m trams. Work is in progress on a 5km, PLN 327M, tramway extension to Gorka Narodowa in the northern suburbs, for completion by the end of 2023. Three more Park and Ride sites will be located along the line to offer passengers greater urban transport options.
