After nine years of work, the 3km (1.9 mile) USD 1.8bn Regional Connector light rail subway between 7th St/Metro Center and Little Tokyo/Arts District in central Los Angeles will open on 16 June with free rides all weekend.

Line A from Long Beach will take over the Azusa section of the Gold Line, while line E from Santa Monica will continue along the Gold Line to East L.A. Gold will then be the colour designation for the E Expo Line. The Connector will provide a one-seat ride through the city centre for passengers who at present have to transfer.

The Federal Government granted Los Angeles Metro USD 670M in new starts funding and USD 160M in infrastructure loans for the project.
