Madrid's Governing Council have approved the purchase of 80 Metro trains in an effort to modernise the fleet, increase capacity and efficiency as well as to improve passenger experience.

The tender worth slightly over EUR 1 billion has been agreed to in order to receive 40 narrow gauge and 40 wide gauge units. The foemer will run on Metro Line 1 whilst the latter will serve passengers on lines 6, 8 and 11.

The 80 trains will each consist of 6 cars with connecting corridors between them, four of which will be engines and the other two trailers with driver cabs at each end.

Metro de Madrid hope that the new aquisitions will enable greater energy efficiency and increased public transport capacity.
Moreover, this modernisation will help to increase the quality of service to citizens, as the new rolling stock units offer superior performance to many of those currently in circulation.
