Škoda Group will participate in the delivery of trams to Melbourne, Australia, a city with one of the largest tram networks in the world.

It has joined forces with French manufacturer Alstom for this contract. The supplier will provide Melbourne with trams for which Škoda Group will produce up to 1,120 traction motors, including an option. The long-standing partnership with Alstom has thus reached a significant milestone. Škoda drives and traction motors power rail and road vehicles around the world. This is the first ever delivery for Škoda to Australia. Between next year and November 2028, 400 traction motors for 100 trams will be delivered to Melbourne. A further 720 motors are part of the option. The whole contract is worth more than EUR 13 million.

“With this prestigious contract, we have proven that we are constantly improving the quality of our products. It shows the trust our partners place in our group's technological expertise and manufacturing capabilities,” says Petr Novotný, President Components & Bus Mobility at Škoda Group, adding, “Many vehicles around the world are running thanks to our traction drives. And I'm thrilled that we can bring our premium motors to Australia for the first time and contribute to the further development of one of the world's largest tram networks, which is located exactly in Melbourne.”

The traction motor for the trams in Melbourne is based on the successful ŠKODA FCX range of motors. This longitudinally mounted motor with an output of 105 kW and a weight of 360 kg drives the tram axle via a two-speed gearbox.

Škoda traction drives have been widely recognised and more than 50,000 have been fitted around the world.
