Montréal’s REM opened by Premier Trudeau

on 28th July, Montreal's 'privater' metro REM was opened by Canadian Premier Trudeau and dignitaries from the city and CDPQ Infra (the company that built and operates it).
The initial 16.6km section runs from an underground terminal at Gate Centrale before surfacing and crossing the St Lawrence River on the Pont Champlain to run to the southern terminus at Brossard. This is a taster of the 67km standard-gauge system under construction.
The contract to build the system was awarded by developer CDPQ Infra to a consortium of SNC-Lavalin and Alstom in April 2018 and work began in 2018 on the CAD6.9 bn system.
Alstom is supplying 106 two-car 2.94m-wide sets of steel-wheel cars built in India to service the system.
Work continues on the rest of the system with the next section to open running north from Gare Centrale to Bois-Franc at the end of 2024.

Metro de Montreal is a 69km four line system that was built between 1962 and 2007. It carries an estimated 246M passengers a year and was modelled on the Paris Metro system.
