Plans for a 19.3km tram line in the Canadian city are on hold because the only consortium left in the tendering process for the construction contract has withdrawn, with costs increasing to somewhere in the range CAD 10-13bn.

The original price estimate was CAD 3.3bn. Although the city mayor said he could promiser a CAD 8.4bn pared-back scheme, the province, which had promised 50% financial support, has commissioned CPDQ Infra (the promoter of Montréal’s private metro) to assess current and projected transport needs, considering all transport modes, but the report will not be completed until spring 2024.

Alstom had already been selected to supply 34 Citadis Spirit trams.
