Gorelektrotrans, the municipal tramway operator for Russia’s largest tramway, has signed an agreement with rolling stock supplier PK Transportnye Systemy and automation technology company Cognitive Pilot to develop and test a tram equipped for automated driverless operation.

Since 2022 PKTS has delivered 70 two-section four-axle articulated trams 71-923 Bogatyr-M to the city that have Cognitive Pilot’s machine vision and AI systems for driver assistance, and it is one of these trams that will be equipped for unattended driving, initially on a test track away from the public domain. Similar trials have taken place within a depot on the Moskva system, but no on-street operation has been authorised yet.
