The NIS 18bn Red Line light rail received its safety certificate at the end of June and it was hoped to open for passengers between Petah Tikva and Bat Yam (24km) before the end of July.

11km of the line is in subway under the city centre with 10 stations and interchange with Israeli Railways services at Tel Aviv Central Railway Station. CRRC Changchun in China has supplied 90 double-ended 100% low-floor 34.8m trams that run in coupled sets. There is a depot at Kiryat Aryeh.

Construction of the line has been underway since 2011 with delays due to security and safety concerns. The operator is a consortium led by local bus operator Egged, with participation by Shenzhen metro.
